Change – is the right path when a problem is relatively simple and the current system needs only a tune-up.
Transformation – is the right path when problems are “wicked” and a completely new system is required.
I have been bouncing those words around in my head and thinking how they apply to my two favorite words – green and sustainable. Here is what I am thinking: Green – which for me is a “thing”, a better thing than another thing, is a similar word to “change” – maybe even could be used instead of that word, based on McGoff’s definition.
Sustainable – on the other hand, is about survival. It is a mindset and is far more complex than we might think that it is. What if we tried using transformation instead of sustainable? Maybe they aren’t interchangeable, but the reality is to sustain this planet is going to require transformation. We need a completely new way of doing things and a completely new way of thinking. Let that gray matter we call our brain, engage a bit in what it does best and see what comes up.
Just let the words “green, sustainable, change, transform” roll around in your head a bit and see what you think…..I look forward to hearing from you.
